Apple store workers in Atlanta file for the company’s first union election

An Apple retail store in Atlanta has filed for election to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Staff at the Cumberland Mall, including vendors, technicians, creatives, and operations experts, will be represented by the American Communications Workers (CWA). More than 70 per cent of the 100-member team has signed union membership cards, according to a press release – the minimum required is 30 per cent.

If a majority of employees vote for the union, the store will be the first Apple store in the United States. Their application is currently undergoing an official NLRB review.

“Apple is a great place to work, but we know that the company can live up to their ideas better, so we are excited to be partnering with our partners to bring Apple to the negotiating table and make it a place to work better, ”Derrick Bowles, an Apple Genius employee at the store, said in a statement Wednesday.

Report from Qarka Late last year he detailed the problems faced by many Apple employees per hour, including low wages and overworked workplaces. In February, the company increased the benefits of its full-time and part-time retail staff. Atlanta employees said that, while providing key sales and services to the company, Apple does not offer a cost-of-living increase or access to equitable stock options.

“We work hard at Apple because we really trust the products and the company, and we want to make sure that every Apple employee is able to afford quality housing and basic living expenses,” said Elli Daniels, who works in the product area. ee Apple.

Employees of other Apple stores are also involved with union drivers, but not all of them work for CWA. Apple retailers at New Central Terminal in New York City have announced they are collecting signatures to form a union. after being voted in February to connect with Workers United. They are the same group working with Starbucks stores nationwide union efforts. Known as Fruit Stand Workers United, Grand Central workers are demanding $ 30-an-hour minimum wage and other adjustments to their costs and benefits.

Workers are part of a wider movement among retail workers who felt they were being taken advantage of during a disaster in which companies saw big economic storms. A group of workers at an Amazon warehouse on Staten Island voted earlier this month to be the first to join a part of the newly formed Amazon trade union. And Google Fiber contractors in Missouri were selected last month to form the first ever parent company Alphabet. They will be part of the Alphabet Trade Union, which is also affiliated with the CWA.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.
